Salford User Network

To promote mental well-being in Salford

The prime function of this site is to give people information (not advice) on what is out there for people suffering mental ill health in Salford.

There is more help out there than people realise!

1 in 4 people suffer some kind of mental ill health some time in their lives...

On a personal level, I first realised something was not quite right with me when I was always shatterd and getting confused, and I was struggling more and more to get up for work. I tried to shake it off myself (but failed) I should have simply gone and spoke honestly to my GP.

Remember  do not be afraid or ashamed to seek advice and ask for help .         Thats what the services are there for !

What is out there that i could One might ask ?   Well quite a lot if you now were look and can get stright forwerd imformation.

Arts on Prescription     What is Arts on Prescription?   one might ask ...

Not a lot of people know about this service, so what is it?? Well, if your GP feels you are really stressed out, and they feel you need time to de-stress, they can give you a prescription, but not like a normal one for medication. It is a prescription to allow you to do some kind of art therapy, usually for a 6 weeks. It is to give you that break you might desperately need. It could be to undertake some pottery, photography, creative writing or even painting (in water colours or oil). It could be doing a woodwork project or gardening in their beautiful garden. There are also other short courses available. I have personally seen first hand, how such a break and time out can help people so much, and I support Arts on Prescription whole heartedly.

In Salford we have an Arts on Prescription service which runs from Start in Salford Wellbeing Centre. Click the link for further details (Link) to Start in Salford.  Start in Salford is an important resource to the residence of Salford.  The centre is based with-in easy bus access and around 100 yards from Salford Precint, on Broad Street. Speak to your GP about Arts on Prescription. There are now other venues within Salford that are following Start in Salford's lead, watch this space for more details!

In and around Salford there are various drop-ins, allotments, art centres and events, some of which allow free internet access if you ever need it.

There will be more indepth information on this site soon. The information will include more details on what is available around Salford, and also links to other useful sites on the internet, such as Mind.  I also recommend TheICARECAFE website, this site covers information on mental ill health as well as various other health issues, it is well worth a look!
